Must-See Midlothian

Midlothian, VA Community

Situated along Ridge Road in Powhatan County, Cozy Acres Campground has welcomed generations of campers since 1974. What started as one man’s dream has blossomed into a beloved family institution that has served the community for nearly five decades. The story of this cherished local landmark reflects the dedication of the Daniel family and their commitment to creating a special place where memories are made.

Origins and Early Development (1972-1997)

The story of Cozy Acres began in 1972 when Larry and Jean Daniel, successful owners of an RV dealership in Richmond, decided to pursue Larry’s longtime dream of creating his own campground. After discovering an ideal plot of land in rural Powhatan County, Larry jumped at the opportunity despite Jean’s initial hesitation. The couple made a bold decision that would ultimately change not only their lives but also create a lasting legacy in the Powhatan community.

For two years, the Daniels dedicated their weekends to transforming the raw land into a functional campground. Their young son Scott joined them in this labor of love, learning the value of hard work and dedication firsthand. The family’s persistence paid off when, shortly after the birth of their second son, Preston, Cozy Acres Campground celebrated its grand opening in 1974, just in time to welcome its first guests for the Fourth of July weekend. Throughout the next two decades, the Daniels established Cozy Acres as a trusted destination for families seeking outdoor recreation in a welcoming environment.

Growth and Family Legacy (1997-Present)

After more than twenty years of successful operation, Larry Daniel recognized the potential for growth and initiated an ambitious expansion in 1997. This Phase II development significantly enhanced the campground’s offerings with additional campsites, a newly paved entrance driveway, and the construction of a clubhouse that would become the social heart of the property. These improvements marked a turning point for Cozy Acres, allowing the facility to accommodate more guests while enhancing their overall experience.

The Daniel family’s commitment to continuous improvement has remained steadfast over the years. In 2002, Scott Daniel, who had established himself in the collision repair business, felt drawn back to his family’s legacy and took over as campground manager. He was later joined by his brother Preston and the next generation of Daniels, making it a true multi-generational family enterprise. Recent years have seen further enhancements, including a picturesque covered bridge, expanded hiking trails, clubhouse additions, and a completely renovated bathhouse in 2019. More than forty-five years since its founding, Cozy Acres continues to be a place where families return year after year, creating memories that span generations and securing its reputation as a beloved Powhatan institution.
