Must-See Midlothian

Midlothian, VA Community

March is more than just the start of spring in Midlothian. It is also National Reading Month, a community-wide reminder that picking up a book is one of the best things any of us can do at any age. Whether you are a parent trying to raise a lifelong reader, a student working through a reading list, or an adult who just misses having a good book on the nightstand, this month is for you.

And with about a week left in March, there is still plenty of time to make it count.

Why March? It All Goes Back to One Very Famous Author

National Reading Month was created to honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday and has since grown into a nationwide celebration of literacy for all ages. The National Education Association launched its Read Across America initiative in 1998, anchoring the celebration to March 2 and expanding literacy awareness throughout the entire month.

The message is simple: reading matters, and a dedicated month gives communities like Midlothian a shared reason to make it a real priority at home and in schools.

What Reading Actually Does for Your Brain (and Your Kids)

Reading is one of those habits that pays off in ways you might not immediately notice. Regular reading builds cognitive function, strengthens memory, expands vocabulary, increases empathy, and even reduces stress.

For kids, the benefits go even deeper:

  • Children who develop strong reading habits early tend to perform better academically, communicate more clearly, and think more critically.
  • According to the National Commission on Reading, being read to at home before starting school is one of the most significant factors in a child’s early academic success.
  • Reading aloud together promotes language development, builds vocabulary, and strengthens the bond between parent and child.

For adults, picking up a book regularly is one of the most low-cost, high-reward habits out there.

Midlothian’s Own Reading Hub: Chesterfield Public Library

Midlothian families have a real asset in their corner. The Midlothian Library completed a full rebuild and reopened in 2024, giving the community a bigger, more modern space to explore. The new building includes an outdoor classroom and reading garden, a local author collection, and is within walking distance of several county schools, Brightpoint Community College, and the YMCA.

Here is what the library has going on for Midlothian readers right now:

  • Story Times for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to build early literacy skills
  • Book discussion groups for adults who want to read and connect with neighbors
  • The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge for families with young children
  • MatchBook, a personalized reading recommendation service where library staff put together a custom reading list based on your interests
  • Libby and Hoopla for borrowing e-books, audiobooks, and digital magazines from home at no cost
  • A Book Swap on March 28, 2026, in the Midlothian Library Community Room, giving you a great reason to wrap up the month with your community

Easy Ways Midlothian Families Can Build a Reading Routine Right Now

You do not need a grand plan or a perfect reading nook to make the most of what is left of National Reading Month. A few simple shifts go a long way:

  • Read together for just 15 minutes a day, whether before bed, at breakfast, or during a quiet afternoon stretch
  • Let your kids pick their own books; children stick with reading longer when the topic is their own idea
  • Mix up the formats, since chapter books, graphic novels, audiobooks, nonfiction, and magazines all count
  • Model reading yourself by picking up a newspaper or novel, where your kids can see you doing it
  • Use the MatchBook service to find titles you will actually want to finish, not just ones that sound impressive

There Is Still Time to Make This Month Matter

March is almost over, but there is a full week left to visit the Midlothian Library, sign up for a program, or grab a stack of books you have been putting off. The March 28 Book Swap is a perfect way to close out the month with your neighbors.

Visit the Chesterfield Public Library website to browse current events, register for programs, and find everything the Midlothian branch has to offer this month and beyond.
